Samson Frendo is a 4th year medical student at Rush Medical College pursuing a career in emergency medicine. He is currently enrolled in Rush’s Health Equity and Social Justice Leadership program through which he has partnered with AFFIRM, Rush’s Center for Gender, Sexuality, and Reproductive Health, allowing him to become a certified AFFIRM trainer, educating staff and faculty on providing competent and quality gender-affirming care. He has also aided in starting a gender-affirming care elective rotation for his peers, spoken on panels, and written articles sharing his knowledge on the trans medical experience. His dedication to health equity expands beyond the queer community, as he has held leadership roles in Rush’s Street Medicine program, and participated in equity efforts for the homeless population during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Dr. Ashlea Winfield is an emergency medicine physician and the Associate Director of the Cook County Health Simulation Center in Chicago, IL. Dr. Winfield earned her Master of Science in Public Health from the Tulane University School of Public Health and medical doctorate from the Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center School of Medicine in New Orleans. She then went on to complete her residency and emergency simulation fellowship at Cook County Health.
Dr. Winfield is committed to increasing diversity in medicine, specifically the recruitment of historically excluded groups. As the founder and chair of the Cook County Emergency Medicine Diversity and Inclusion Committee she coordinates multiple activities aimed at fostering a culture of safety for all individuals within her program and institution. Due to her ongoing DEI efforts she was awarded the Cook County Health Physician of the Year in 2022. As the Associated Director for the Cook County Simulation Center, Dr. Winfield focuses on procedural competency and task trainer development, using simulation to teach topics in DEI, and the use of medical simulation to inspire interest in STEM careers. Dr. Winfield has lectured nationally and regionally on topics related to caring for gender expansive patients, trauma informed care, implicit bias, and promoting equitable processes in residency recruitment. |
Matthew Vail, LCSW (he/him) is Manager of Social Work and Patient Navigation for Affirm: the Rush Center for Gender, Sexuality, and Reproductive Health. He is a practicing psychotherapist who works with adults across the lifespan experiencing complex trauma, substance use issues, and grief and loss. He trains other providers in the provision of trans-competent care and is an advocate for reduced barriers to accessing affirming and medically necessary services. Matthew has co-authored several articles on the integration of social work into outpatient medical settings in order to promote health equity. He serves on Rush University System for Health’s LGBTQ Leadership Council and is co-chair for the Chicago Network for LGBT Aging. |

Dr. Schechter is Director of Gender Affirmation Surgery at Rush University. He serves on the Executive Committee of The World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH), helped to author the 7th Edition of The Standards of Care, and serves as co-lead for the Surgery and Post-Operative Care section of the 8th Edition of The Standards of Care. He authored the first surgical atlas concerning Surgical Management of Transgender Individuals and is a founding member and president-elect of The American Society for Gender Surgeons. Dr. Schechter is recognized by Castle Conolly and Chicago Magazine as a “Top Doctor.”
Dr. Schechter is a past president of both the Illinois Society of Plastic Surgeons and The Chicago Chapter of the American College of Surgeons. He was the recipient of the 2013 Illinois State Bar Association Community Service Award for his advocacy efforts on behalf of the transgender community was an invited discussant to the Pentagon in 2017 to discuss military service by transgender individuals. Dr. Schechter received his medical degree, with honors, from the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine and completed his residency in general and plastic surgery as well as a fellowship in reconstructive microsurgery at the University of Chicago Hospitals. While at the University of Chicago, Dr. Schechter was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha honor society and graduated as The Outstanding Student in Surgery. |

Dr. Iyengar is an adult Endocrinologist at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, IL, and specializes in gender-affirming care; he helped establish and currently serves as Medical Director for Affirm: The Rush Center for Gender, Sexuality, and Reproductive Health. |

Jaclyn Rodriguez is the SANE Coordinator for the Office of the Illinois Attorney General. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Engineering degree from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from Loyola University Chicago. She has been practicing as a Registered Nurse for almost 20 years. Jaclyn became a SANE-A in 2006 and a SANE-P in 2022. Since becoming SANE Coordinator in 2015, she has provided education to over 15,000 healthcare providers, law enforcement, advocates and others on topics related to sexual assault, human trafficking, non-fatal strangulation and forensic nursing. As part of the Attorney General’s Office, she has participated in writing key pieces of legislation that are shaping the care of sexual assault victims throughout the state, including legislation for law enforcement, hospitals and health care professionals. She is an active member of the International Association of Forensic Nurses and the Academy of Forensic Nurses, participating on multiple committees. | Anna Candoleza Muglia is the SANE Program Coordinator and an ED Charge Nurse at Rush University Medical Center. She had been practicing as an ED nurse since 1994. She started at Rush ED since 2001 and had worn many hats. When she started her didactic training as a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner, completing her clinical log was challenging since she was the only nurse pursuing forensic as a specialty during that time. With the help of the SANE Coordinator for the Office of the Attorney General and several other off-site mentors in Illinois she successfully completed her clinical log and eventually earned her national certification as a SANE-A. When she started the SANE Program in June 2019 she had recruited several ED nurses who were interested in the field of forensic and helped mentor them in their training as a SANEs. The program at Rush University Medical Center provides 24/7 SANE coverage, these group of highly skilled nurses provides comprehensive medical forensic services and advocacy to all sexual assault survivors. Anna’s passion in the field of forensic, patient advocacy and mentorship led her to join the International Association of Forensic Nurses where she is currently serving as the president of the Illinois Chapter. | Neeral Sheth is an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences at Rush Medical College and serves as the department’s Division Chief of Medical Education Programs. He is the Psychiatry Clerkship Director and Pre-clerkship Director. He has developed and incorporated curricula on trauma-informed care, LGBTQ+ health, and advanced communication techniques for the medical college. Clinically, Dr. Sheth has an LGBTQ+ outpatient psychiatry clinic and also spends some time on the emergency psychiatry service at Rush. |
