ICEP mourns the loss of longtime ACEP and ICEP member, Jeffery Shafer, MD, FACEP

ICEP mourns the loss of longtime ACEP and ICEP member, Jeffery Shafer, MD, FACEP passed September 21, 2024, surrounded by his loving family.

Dr. Shafer began his distinguished medical career in emergency medical services as a paramedic while studying at St. Louis University, where he also attended medical school. He completed his residency in emergency medicine at Washington University and went on to finish a fellowship in EMS. His professional journey included impactful roles with Vituity at the HSHS Hospital system, SSM Health DePaul Hospital, and as medical director for HSHS St. Elizabeth’s Hospital EMS System and SSM Health in O’Fallon, Illinois (IL EMS Region 4).

A dedicated leader, Dr. Shafer also served as medical team manager for Missouri Task Force 1 (FEMA Urban Search & Rescue Task Force) and contributed to various emergency response agencies. In 2023, he was honored with the Brilliance in Caring Award at the Vituity Division 3 Spring Symposium, recognizing his unwavering commitment to excellence in care.

Dr. Shafer will be remembered not only for his exemplary service as an emergency medicine physician but also for his vibrant spirit, humility, and dedication to making the world a better place.
