Weekly Legislative Update – May 24, 2010
The House and Senate retu to Springfield this week with the House coming in on Monday and the Senate on Wednesday. While there have been discussions among legislators and the Goveor over the last 2 weeks, there is still not a clear plan or resolution for fixing the budget shortfall. The Goveor continues to press for a plan to borrow money in order to make a scheduled pension payment versus skipping or shorting the payment. Additionally, there appears to be a proposal for a variety of cuts but, whether or not there is widespread support for the plan is unknown at this point. The Senate passed various components for a budget prior to leaving 2 weeks ago and are holding off on coming to Springfield in order to see what happens in the House earlier in the week. The end of the month of May will bring with it the need for Republican support for any budget plan. At this time there appears to be no Republican support and no Republican participation in the budget dealings.
