Weekly Legislative Update – May 10, 2010
May 7th, the scheduled adjoument day for the General Assembly has come and gone. And while the legislature is not in Springfield any longer, they left without approving a working budget for the coming fiscal year. The Senate passed several measures to fund FY11 but, the House was unable to put together enough votes to get those same measures off to the Goveor. Speaker Madigan adjoued the House to the call of the chair, which means they could be called back this week, or in several weeks from now. He said he “understood that they still had much work to do”, and suggested that when a solution is reached it could be accomplished in a short time frame – one or two days. He did not, however, give any indication as to when that might actually occur. Moving past the end of May to get something into place will trigger the need for additional votes and mean that Republicans will have to become a part of the package.
